Former devoted servant of the great vampire of Poldachie-Golgovine, Kharl is left all alone after his master is murdered and wanders the night in search of Amy, the presumed murderer. But the villagers, terrified by his grievous appearance, drive him from the village, which is when he joins the Freaks, who put him in charge of the circus' reception.
