c Otto

Released on Friday 25/02/11

It's already hard enough being a teenager but Otto wouldn’t have minded so much if he’d only had to cope with acne. Despite doing his very best to hide his first tentacles, he soon had no choice but to leave his school and join the Skeelz. And although he still has some problems fitting in at parties, he’s at the top of everyone's list when it comes to playing dodge ball!

First development of the 2 of this character’s different developments:

Damage = Damage Opp.

Otto has the same number of Damage points as their opponent. This number only takes into account the figure shown on the opponent’s card and does not include changes related to an Ability, Bonus or Fury. If the Ability is blocked, Otto’s Damage is that shown on their card.

Protection: Ability

The Ability of Skeelz can not be blocked while the Protection: Ability Bonus is activated.

Caelus's Student Review Log

Student Number 81008

(Note to Self: Remember to make announcement- Calling Otto 'Davy Jones' will get you automatic dettention. The same goes for 'Cthulu', or 'Doc Oct'. That's bullying, and it's wrong)

Otto is a strange child... and coming from me, that means somthing. Like most teenage boys, he feels akward and is going through quite a shy phase, one that I remember so many years ago. But unlike me, Otto started to grow tentacles at the age of 12, and his skin soon became rubbery. I asked why once, and all I got out of the whispering is that his mother was... a Japanese SchoolGirl? I'm almost certain that's what he said, but then again, my hearing hasn't been the same for years.
Otto never knew much about his father, and his mother turned white anytime he tried to talk about it.

None the less, Otto has gone through a brief period of ridicule at Skeelz academy, but it's nothing that any new kid doesn't go through. Some members from his own class have begun defending him every chance they get (that's Corvus, and Chiara for those of you who aren't familiar with our roster... Eloxia just plots and calls him names). Soon enough, he might even be in the 'in' crowd, seeing how much of a legend he is in dodgeball (he always catches the ball... always... never throws them though)

Otto isn't the best suited for combat, and enjoys the simple things in life, including watching walrus specials on Animal Planet, and making coton candy in the cafeteria. But when forced in a brawl during Cley's combat class, he always has a tentecle prepared for each punch thrown at him. I've never seen him use more of his apendages than neccesarry to take out his opponent, it seems that he's doing his best to not hurt anybody, and he often quotes the golden rule accordingly. "Fight others the way you wish to get fought in turn...."

That can't be right...

This cards needs a decent review. Don't mind if I do then.

And so we begin with pros, naturally:
-Otto's ability allows for some pretty high damage. I know, damage=damage opp. is considered too shaky for higher star cards like Damian or Phonos, but Otto is in a much different situation. You see, if I had to guess, I'd say the average damage value you'll see in ELO is around 3-5, which is just not enough for a 4* or 5* typically, but Otto is only a 2*. I'd say that's a fair amount of damage for his star count.
-People are, in my opinion, disregarding the amount of pressure this card can often put on the opponent. If they have some high base damage 5* in their hand, they may be hesitant about when they play that card for fear of Otto sneaking out of farting nowhere and using their own capabilities against them. So in an unconventional sort of way, Otto can help you control the field and predict your opponent's movements, if you're crafty anyway.
-Obviously, he has the Skeelz quality of being immune to SOA and SOB, given that they are presented one at a time.
-I'd argue that competition isn't much of a problem for Otto. Yeah, Sasha's a great card, and fills in a miserably blatant attack manipulation gap in her clan, but she's less useful in a half deck, quite obviously. Redra is also great in some deck setups but not others, seeing as some decks have enough defenders already, and there's no fun in drawing a hand with no offensive potential whatsoever. Past those two, his competition isn't too intimidating. I'd use him over the shaky likes of Jessica, Milton, Anton, or Liam. Then there's Wilhem; We don't talk about Wilhem.
-Oh yeah the art is awesome, but you all knew that. The artist does a terrific job with facial expressions, as can be seen even more so at level one.

And then of course, cons:
-Seven power is a flaw. Some may argue on the contrary, but for his clan, seven power just isn't enough as I see it. It's not utterly terrible, but you will have to adjust to the fact that there's hardly anything you will beat pill-for-pill in ELO, and by hardly anything I mean nearly nothing. Attack manipulation hurts, power manipulation often is hurts even more so, and both will just brutalize our poor tentacled friend.
-Yeah, I know, damage=damage opp. is shaky. I'm sure we all know it. I still stand by my word that his star count makes it far more forgivable, but having one damage is really never too convenient. Even two or three often aren't enough for a card who has nothing else going for him besides seven power and a Skeelz' brand truckload of solidness.
-All-stops are a problem, right? I'm almost inclined to deny that statement. The reason is that all-stops are somewhat rare and typically seen only one at a time per game. If you manage to direct an all-stop (which are a huge problem for a good portion of this clan) to a 2*, away from your more vital players, without blowing an irrational amount of pillz, then congratulations. That could very well pay off for you.

Finally, a conclusion:
8ish/10. That's a number, right? Sure, I'm very likely overrating Otto, but I do find him to be a generally underrated card. He can have some great damage, relative to his star count, without needing a massive dose of dumb luck, he can sometimes pressure and control the opponent, and his price makes it seem all the more alluring.
