r Russel

Released on Friday 22/04/11

To steal one of Ielena's ancient books of magic, you'd either have to be a bit stupid or have an insatiable desire for the occult. After escaping Nistarok’s fangs and the guards protecting the Nightmare Manor, Russel was finally struck down by the curse protecting the ancient tome and is now a werewolf at the Clan’s beck and call. So let that be a lesson to one and all - no one steals from the Nightmare clan and gets away with it!

If the number of Life points of the player controlling the opposing character is lower or equal to 3, then the ability has no effect.

YEAUHHHHH!!! A WEREWOLF, FINALLY! and might i add that i knew it would be a revenge card for the Nightmare clan..heh. anyway, my take on Russel...

Russel: 7/4
ability: revenge: -4 opp. life, min. 3
bonus: SoB
max level: 4

+ Potential for 8 differential. As expected from a Nightmare, his ability makes him a very dangerous card.
+ 7 power is decent. It's above average for a Nightmare though.
+ I would say a major weakness is attack manipulation, but his SoB takes care of most of that problem (sorry Rescue, Montana, and Uppers). In fact, SoB takes care of a lot of problems that he could be faced with like Roots or even All Stars.
+ Even against ability based SoA, he has a serviceable 4 damage. you can live with 7/4...kinda.
+ Gets past big damage reducers with high mins like Neloe, TrinmkkT, or Ricardo.

- Competition with Oshitsune, kenny, Glorg, Azel, and Azgroth. All of which I would probably take in my deck over Russel. Oshitsune is obviously better, and thus is banned. But Azgroth has better power (and reduction to go with it) despite only 4 damage, kenny has more differential. I'd say Russel is a good in-between of those two cards, but not better that either at what they do best..if you get what i mean. However, there is also Glorg, whose all stop capabilities are much coveted and Azel also gets past damage reduction.
- Conditional. Revenge based means you have to loose first in order to get his max potential. With cards like Orlok, Nistarok, and Dudley Ld, this is not that bad. but non-conditional is always better than conditional for unpredictability's sake.
- 4 stars. is he worth the space he takes? well that's up to you, but i'd highly question whether he is worth all 4 of those stars especially with so many more dangerous, high starred Nightmare cards.
- No ability (with could happen often) means 4 damage, which is kinda puny for a 4 star card.
- Nightmare doesn't need a -life card. they are already very good at getting around damage reduction with Phyllis, Pan, Azel, Arawaka, and Vince.
- Even so, most damage reducers can still function at full potency against him. Gabrielle, slyde, Marina, jane ramba, and even Scott Ld are not affected at all against him.

I must say that this card does not get a thumbs up for me. There are too many flaws and he fills a need that has already been better filled by other cards that can take his place. Furthermore, he is a rare and thus will probably cost more..well Oshitsune, Glorg and kenny are pretty expensive too..On top of that, he is revenge bound. I really want to like the werewolf, but this is just not that good of a card. Some may find a use for him, but this is not what the Nightmare clan needed. Indeed, a 7/8 is pretty beastly (heh see what i did there? cuz he is a wolfman..w/e), but Russel doesn't quite make the cut. If you happen to get him in a pack, that's great; but i wouldn't buy this card.

Might be a good idea to turn him into Growth: - 1 Opp. Life Min 3 and ban Cutey to balance out the change.

His ability is situational and not really worth it, witch makes Azel, Azgroth, Glorg, Kenny and Oshitsune pretty much better choices in most of the decks + he's rare, meaning his price will never really fall too low. I would actually argue that in spite of hes predictability you would be loosing more battles than winning because of him.

6.25/10 - not a terrible card and even being rare, he's still pretty much the cheapest 4* Nightmare out there, meaning - usable for beginning players, so you can buy him if you're short on Clintz, but be ready to upgrade, whenever you have the chance.
