The Montana - An in-depth guide

A very straightforward clan, the Montana don't muck around with the nitty-gritty. They don't like life reduction, they don't like life gain, they don't like pillz manipulation, and they don't like Poison. With the mafia, it's about what you've packed under the hood; to the Montana, that means damage and a neat little bypass past the opponent's defenses in the form of their attack reduction. Playing the Montana is a lot like being in a firefight; either you shoot the guy down first, or you get shot down before you manage it. Pray for the former.

As such, the Montana makes for an excellent newbie deck. You get in a fight, and using your abilities and bonus you try to win round after round, damn the consequences. No need to wonder if the life gap will be big enough after you hit, how much life he'll have left after Poison, how much life you'll have left after gain, whether you're going to have enough Pillz afterward after manipulation. None of that for the Montana. This means that newbies will get the basics of the game extremely quickly; after all, it's all about the attack anyway.

After they've got their feet under them, most Montana newbies splinter into two main groups: one group wanders off to try exciting new prospects such as the Piranas for their pillz manipulation, or the Freaks for their Poison, while the other group stays within their comfort zone and try to perfect their Montana before trying anything else. So if you're reading this wondering if the Montana are for you, this post is to help you decide. I don't claim to be the best Montana player around, but I've played them enough to know all their little quirks and play styles, so I daresay my input will be quite reasonable. This is going to be rather lengthy, so I'll apologize for that beforehand.

-=-=-SO WHAT'S SO GOOD ABOUT THE Montana?-=-=-

Well, like I said before; the Montana are a lot about brute strength, and little much else. You're basically bringing a sledgehammer into the fight; you swing it with all your might and don't much care about anything else. The Montana pack a lot of damage under their hood; sure, they don't have the extreme damage that the La Junta or Fang Pi Clang have, but they have enough to make it understood that they mean business. Many of their 3* cards have 4~6 damage, which compliment nicely with the clan's 5* cards, who have an average of 6~8.

And of course, one cannot forget that they've got that mean bonus to help them out too. As the best attack reduction in game, the Montana bonus definitely doesn't disappoint; with a 12 attack gap generated from your bonus alone, many clans find it difficult just going pill-for-pill with the Montana. Not to mention that many Montana cards have abilities that help in their battle one way or another; power reducing Mona is one of the staples for the Montana, while Avola's extreme damage just makes pilling her all that much more worth it.

The Montana generally excel most in 3~4 pillz rounds; power doesn't matter much in the low-pillz fights, not when you've got such an irritating bonus to chip off at their total attack.

The Montana is, in general, a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none clan. They don't have the extreme power of the Ulu Watu/Bangers, they don't have the high damage of the La Junta/Fang Pi Clang, they're not the pillz manipulators the Piranas/Junkz are, they don't create life gaps like the Jungo/Nightmare. They've got a little of everything, and they combine that to be a very potent combination. They're equipped to deal with almost every situation adequately, if not well.

Well, like every other clan out there, the Montana do have their weaknesses. Let's start with this: cards with attack manipulation that outrivals the Montana bonus, generally outclass the Montana clan as a whole. To be honest, the Montana's best feature is that massive attack reduction they've got. If you can somehow beat that attack reduction, you've stripped them of their best quality, and from there the round's halfway won. Fortunately for the Montana, there aren't a lot of cards who can do that; -12 attack IS a lot to cater for.

Riding that train of thought, I'll be the first to admit that the Montana are HEAVILY reliant on ability and bonus. Take either one away from them, and they're not really that much of a threat. Most people seem to reckon that SOB is the Montana's main weakness; remove the bonus and you more than half the Montana's effectiveness. This is very much true; a lot of Montana cards depend greatly on that crazy attack reduction to win their bout. That said, SOA ranks as high on the Montana-counter list as SOB does; as mentioned earlier, most Montana cards have battle-changing abilities to help them win that round. What most fail to realize is that this creates a dependency on these abilities, one that's not inherent in the cards but in the players themselves. Play too much Montana, and you're going to be at a loss when you no longer have Mona's -2 opp power min 4 to work with, even though 6 power and -12 attack is plenty to fight with already.

Note that previously, I said the Montana are equipped to deal with every situation ADEQUATELY. This means that while they do their job WELL, they don't do their job EXCELLENT. It's difficult to play weird with the Montana; most Montana users are, to some degree, predictable. That's because they just can't pull off some play styles that are accessible to other clans. They can't 0 pill cards, because most of them have powers lower than their high minimum of 8, unlike the minimum of 3 like the Uppers and the Sakrohm; they can't go crazy and pill 9 for a starter like Scubb or Shann because it just isn't worth it for them to do so; the list goes on and on.

As such, you're going to be a little lacking on the abilities side. There's not much you can find in the Montana abilities; power manipulation and damage manipulationa re about the best you're gonna get. There's the rare SOA or SOB, but those usually come with heavy price tags attached, such as pathetic power (Simon comes to mind), conditional abilities (Edd) or, in the case of Lyse Teria Cr, the heavy price tag comes with a literal meaning.

Well, that's entirely up to you. Here's the breakdown:

-Nice attack bonus
-Decent damage overall
-Good for almost every situation

-Very dependent on both ability and bonus
-Jack-of-all-trades literally means you're a master of none
-Very little in the way of abilities makes for predictable gameplay

It all depends on what you'd like for your game. Do you want to swing the heavy Hammer of attack manipulation, or deal with the finesse of handling different abilities at once? I don't know. But I hope this guide helped you make your choice.

Montana -
bonus: -12 atk min 8

Overview - The first clan to ever set foot into Clint city. 3 years ago people would of argued that this was the worst clan in the game however with a tonne of strong reinforcements and a complete reshuffle in their ranks they have become a strong formidable clan and their mono choices reign supreme. Before Hugo was banned this clan was the worst to face with Hugtana devouring everything in it's path (thankfully those days are over...). The bonus of the clan is a strange one. It is the same as Rescue (expect not support and minus instead of plus) but reduces to a high 8. This results in you possibly adding a pill to your card so that it doesn't get beaten in 0 pill play. Because of their bonus they are easily the best clan in low pilled battles and also the easiest clan to master. Montana are a very popular choice in beginner play as well as staying strong in ELO and second to Uppers in Type 2 DT and T1 DM.

Strengths -
- Very strong bonus
- Good solid power in staples
- A jack of all trades clan (Whereby they have a string of all kinds of abilities).
- Very strong 3*s
- Not really a strength for the clan but Spaighi is the arguably the best splash in the game.
- Superb mono options
- Make nice supporting half decks
- counter Rescue

Weaknesses -

- Low damage in staples - It's averages at about 3-4 base damage so Montana usually have to win 3/4 rounds to win.
- lacks alot of good 5*s for survivor type 2
- You usually have to play a pill on a Montana card because of the bonus.
- Their bonus is min 8 so is undermined by other - atk clans like Sakrohm and Uppers.

Overall the Montana look strong in their strength and weaknesses but their bonus whilst being a strength can be a huge downfall for them.

Example - Nimestiec at 0 pillz vs the Montana is a huge probelm...
As a result in these situations your -12 cap will not save you.

The bonus is an aid however all because of good maths.
A perfect example is mona

because of her dangerous ability plus the Montana bonus equal 6 power cards having a fight on their hands.

mona at 1 pill = 12 atk
Endo at 4 pillz = 30 +(-opp power) = 20 - 12 = 8 - Endo is still beaten at that many pillz as opposed to mona at 1 pill.

There unfortunately isn't a whole lot of tactics with this deck just win win win should do the trick. Because of their low damage make sure you keep an eye out for their nukes otherwise it could spell a quick defeat for you.

Courageous Edd -

There is one tactic that remains a popular opening for Montana. Because of edd's ability plus the Montana bonus he is one of the best cards to lead with for the Montana. Make sure you master this tactic however because in certain situations 1 pill just isn't enough. I will explain this tactic briefly but it is up to you to master this tactic in future matches.

The tactic is usually 1 pill in the opening with edd (assuming you go first). Because of his strength your opponent will nearly always play a DR vs him to pillow his hit. Getting that DR out is what you need so you can hit later with your other Montana.
Make sure you count defeat cards as well because he could play them at no pillz.

However what if you are faced with an opponent with no DR?
In this case you go at more because you could expect a surprise counter-attack which you don't need and with no DR from your opponent you will always get 5 damage.

Vs bad hands - You don't want to play 1 pill again because your opponent needs to over extend himself because of his bad hand.

Of course with all these cases opponents will play differently but these are generally what players will do.

Vs DR: one pill
Vs no DR: 3+ pillz
Vs bad hands: 4+ pillz

Overall - Montana are a great clan to start with. Whilst they have issues in the damage department they are still a strong formidable clan in nearly all game modes with their fun mono options. Have fun with these crooks smiley

Card name: Sonny

The oldest son of the Don and first in line to take over the Montana family, Sonny is not a man to mess with. level 3: 4/2
level 4: 6/3
level 5: 8/6 Ability: +4 attack

Background: This card in based off Santino "Sonny" Corleone from the Godfather movies. His 8 power fills in the gap the Montana's have as far as power goes, the only other 8 power card is Enzo. Also his 8/6 is the reversed stats of his father the Don at 6/8. Even his ability is the opposite, while Don has -4 opp attack Sonny has +4 attack. This refers to how Sonny is young and full of energy to attack while his father is slowing down. Sonny would be the wall that the Montana's lack and could also be used for a 2HKO.
