ELO in the Standard format

So, if standard would be introduced tomorrow what would be the dominant cards/clans?

What cards will need to be banned, if any?

What holes will need to be patched in each clan, for optimal ELO use, without copying old cards and without changing the overall character of the clan?

A preliminary list of cards can be found in a post from the "Standard" subject, some cards may be changed depending on the date on which Standard will be introduced and if it will cover the last 2 years or more.

I hope this topic will not lead to a rant against standard

Personally I find this new format challenging, and refreshing for a game that was starting to look old
I'm curious how players view the available card pool of the future Standard ELO format and how are they planning to use the limited (for now, until more cards are introduced) "tools" available to them

Even though some clans may have an advantage, for being the newer clans: Berzerk and Vortex I feel that there are many contenders, clans with very good ELO cards, some used now, some less used maybe partially because older cards were considered better

The list is on post 145, on the 15th page of the subject, by the way.

Well an obvious change will be that Berzerk and Vortex will gain a major advantage, as each has twenty something usable cards while the other clans have at most ten. The higher end Vortex cards are already quite expensive, and this will likely make them more so. Spyke is the card most likely to receive a ban in standard ELO, but if he isn't Berzerk will definitely be the clan to beat in ELO.

Sorry, I simply can't support Standard. As per your request, I'll spare you the rant and offer a concise reason instead: Any game of strategy with 2/3 pieces missing becomes far, far less interesting.

All Stars seem to have only one 3* to survive the standard, but overall they fair better than most. Seems they might gain a bit of emphasis on life manipulation. They don't seem to have any defeat cards left, but that's likely to be a common problem. Would be interested to see a few more cards that play off their bonus appear, similar to how Robb Cr and Randy did.

Bangers would become a much more straightforward clan, with emphasis on protection. With the exception of arguably Angie, none of their cards have abilities which help them win, so that's a gap that would need filling. There stars are pretty evenly distributed, at least.

Fang Pi Clang will rise up the ladder, as it has received some very usable cards every category. Heitachi Kusuri Tsubame and Zhu Tang are exceptional cards even in the current meta, and in standard they will do nicely.

Freaks have a handy amount of cards worth using, though most of their staples will be lost. They won't have any attack manipulation, and they'll be particularly susceptible to SOA.

GHEIST will likely remain a top clan, as while they're losing quite a few of their best cards, they still have a few usable ones and their bonus will probably a harder to counter for certain clans.

Jungo will likely see a little more play, as they loose less of their staples thanks to be a relatively new clan. They'll become susceptible to SOA though, ironic given they're the clan that introduced Stop: abilities and had so many of them previously.

Shameless promotion time.

Or you can join it in XC-1984's event.

Apparently that was march 1st, 2012. I was wondering why Ojibway was omitted and thought the person who posted the list purposely did that to make Roots seem useless, but no. He's just a little too old to be played in the new standard 25 format.

At first I was totally against the change, but after making the list... it seems like it'll be exactly the same. Just a certain amount of characters used and some overlooked simply because there were better ones in the clan. It'll make some staples obsolete which will be replaced by new staples. The problem is just the potential market manipulation (at least the way I see it)

Spyke runs wild as it is, if we limit most clans options whilst leaving Bezerk their entire cohort, surely they will dominate pretty hard to begin with unless Spyke gets banned instantly? I kinda assume he's going the second Standard comes into effect, but we'll wait and see I guess.

Junkz will lose all but two pillz manipulators, and their difficulty with hitting hard will remain. Most their cards will have the high end in power/attack, so they may take on a role similar to how Ulu Watu is now.

La Junta will be down to one 2*, so that gap will need filling. They've seen some good releases, but still won't be a top clan by any means.

Montana will have be tilted heavily to the upper star end, with 5 of their 9 available cards 4 and 5* stars. Combined with the fact that the remaining 4 low star cards aren't terribly good, they may become a high half deck clan alone.

Nightmare have ten cards, despite what the list says (Russel is erroneously placed in Piranas). They're a clan who remain pretty solid, though in standard they'll be sorely lacking in power cards, with not a single natural 8 and only 2 cards which can get up to that thanks to abilities.

Piranas are hit pretty bad: Eight cards left, two of which are mono only, yet its impossible to make a 25* deck with them. So that means 6 viable cards. While that pool is more usable than say what the Roots have, they're still half deck only. Bonnie Ld would be back, though.

Pussycats have always struggled in ELO, and are likely to continue to do so: with only 1 2* card, and a good amount of their others not having the most reliable abilities, they won't be the most appealing clan to play as.

Its impossible to build a mono deck with Rescue's available 9, yet they're a mono clan. Enough said.

Roots will be a train wreck: 6 available cards, one is support, one is the worst heal card ever, and the remaining 3 make a mediocre 16* half deck. Ouch

Sakrohm will likely see some love: good star distribution, a variety of abilities, Sak will likely see some half decks and even mono based around Sigma.

Sentinel has seen some good releases recently. They're viable as mono, though half decks will be more common. They also have some of the strongest cards vs. SOA, so they're one of the few clans who won't grow more weaker against that.

Skeelz have a more robust selection than most at twelve. Their staples like Greem Chiara and Sandro are gone, however, and many of their cards come off as lukewarm. Usable, but not exceptional.

Ulu Watu were always more of an ELO clan, and with only 8 usable cards and one star too much for mono, Ulu isn't very high on the list. Their low stars range from niche to unimpressive, and their high end cards are all rares. They'll likely see a release next week, though, so as long as that's a usable card of 4*s or less they might see some use. Emphasis on might.

Uppers do pretty well in ELO, and given that they can put together a mono deck or some half decks which would be acceptable even before standard came about from what they have left, they should remain doing pretty well.

And... that's it. Just my personal analysis. I could be completely wrong in some regards here.

Bezerk + Vortex will probably be the top 2 clans to use, with most choices available. While clans like Roots will be stumped even further. Considering they got what, 3 releases last year...
Imo, i reckon this will be a good change, but we'll have to wait and see. But if they plan to keep it they need to change starter decks to suit these new characteristics, for all the newer players out there
