As many of us know, there are some characters that give us penalty points for drawing them in a match during a daily tournament. They are divided into three groups, Group A, Group B, and Group C. Each of these groups has its own pre-determined penalty.
Lately, I've seen many players share their discontent with players that use these penalized cards during a tournament. I've seen players comment on adding players that use these cards to their personal blacklist and even some people criticizing others for their usage of the penalized cards. I don't really know how many people actually have an issue with players using these cards. I see no issue with a player's usage of the penalized cards as the player using the cards receives a decent point reduction from using what many players see as an 'overpowered' card.
I would like to know what you, as a DT player, think of players that use these penalized cards. Are they really that big of an issue for you during a tournament? Or are these matches just like playing regular matches for you?
Also, if you do have an issue with playing against players that use these cards, do you think that it would be more beneficial for you if you were to receive additional battle points if your card beat a card that would receive a penalty (i.e. your Ongh beating an opponents Gil would give you an addition 2 battle points)?
I'm just curious about common DT players think about the usage of penalized cards.
I play in DTs now and then with a low * deck and I never find it a problem (not many people do it).
The thing about the penalized cards is that they are, for the most part overpowered. especially the higher point reduction ones. so if you run into a hand with a bunch of them, the player is clearly not playing to win in the dt, and simply playing in dt to play in dt. that one game can be the difference between 1st and 5th, so losing it to a player with an overpowered hand who clearly isn't trying to win the dt is going to be insanely annoying.
Well. Using those powerful characters makes sense if you can make streaks. At some point the streak bonus is higher than the penalty from characters, so ensuring streaks with high powered characters IS one possible win strategy. The downside is obiviously that one lose is something you cannot afford, it instantly vaporizes your chances to score good since you need full DT's length of streak to race all other decks.
High star non-penalty decks rely on getting constant wins and playing fast games (by KO on round 2/3) - or to gain points from special conditions (extra life/pills) - and to make moderate streak bonuses, their average point score per match is low or at best average, so they need to make it fast and not lose too many games. Here one can afford to lose few games during tournament.
Low star non-penalty decks rely on high points from singular games. Here one can lose every third game without it making too much impact. They gain points from being downhanded and from winning higher star characters, but these decks wont accumulate streak points easily (but if they do its probably taking them very high in rankings). Losing is almost inevitable here, but it is compensated by higher score from the wins.
So - you have roughly three options how to play DT seriously. Pick your poison and realize others will do something different....
E10din said it perfectly. People who are using penalized cards have a different objective than a DT player shooting for a top place. This skews the results of the tournament in a pretty random way.
I would actually love it if there was a "missions" room -- Extended format, short timers, etc. to facilitate mission grinding. Missions could still be achieved in any format a player desires, and it makes sense to use Lds to encourage people trying new game modes and so forth... But it's not a lot of fun running into a deck full of OP high-penalty cards that's being run by a player who's just out to finish up 500 clan wins.
I wouldn't say that.
Zatman and other cards like Gil can be VERY effective in DTs, granted you use them properly.
If you want to cut down on the trolls in the room, just limit the number of banned cards a player can use during tournament hours,(lets say two to one deck as an arbitrary number),so you dont have some moron running around with a graks Uranus zatman Jackie Cr hand running around ruining people's day.
It doesn't completely get rid of the problem, but it sure makes it a lot more boring for the trolls to be able to troll.
I think its immature to blacklist players for using penalty cards. Because technically they are not cheating, they are complying with the rules of the game, technically you are allowed to play these cards whilst bearing with the penalty for playing them.
Its the rules that need reformation or you can make sure that players with penalty cards decks only match up with other player using penalty card decks in the DT.
Besides banning them won't do you any good, they'll keep on playing.
