I'd like to make a suggestion regarding ELO mode.
Even though ELO is, in a way, more balanced than ever before, I think there is still a pretty big issue. A lot of clans have too many cards that are good in fairly random ways, sometimes countering the opponent's hand by chance instead of design. While the most powerful cards like Kalindra get ELO banned rather fast, the slightly OP counter-cards created to deal with them remain...
The result is that clans have less of an identity than ever, power creep is becoming more prominent, and the meta feels less focused than before the last wave of perma-bans. FPC does SoB better than Piranas. Sakrohm have a recently released 4* that's better than a recently released Skeelz 5*. And so on...
I think Standard was an attempt to solve this exact issue, and I can now see the need for a solution along those lines. However, I think there is a far more eloquent way to implement it.
Here's my idea:
-A ranked mode, similar to ELO.
-Only 8 clans playable per week, 5 chosen at random and 3 chosen by player vote.
-ELO banned cards, both temp and perma, not playable in this mode.
-To give players incentive to play both ELO and the new mode, increase rewards for players outside of T100 in both modes.
What does everyone think? Would this be a good play mode to see? Any issues, suggestions, feedback of any kind? Very eager to hear if ELO regulars would enjoy this mode.
I think that's alright. However, the bans affecting this new mode could cause certain clans selected among the chosen 8. That sounded awkward, so let me give you an example.
Banned characters for this week: Marina, Saki, Bogdan, Grudj, Mona, Blaaster Cr, Pilzken, Qubik, Shifou
Clans available: Freaks, Bangers, All-Stars, La Junta, Junkz, Fang Pi Clang, Uppers, Rescue
Everyone would be using either Uppers OR Rescue, because every other clan is hampered by bans. Therefore I suggest clans be selected in advance, the ban list separated from standard ELO's ban list, and a system where players vote 1 card in advance for the next week from EACH playable clan. Except maybe from the weak clans like Frozn or Berzerk.
I feel there is a lack of diversity, among playable cards clans have, regardless of what mode you play. But its just like MtG, there are alot of cards, but if you are going to play competitivly then your options for what kind of deck/cards you can use are very limitied, and if you goto a MtG tournament, then chances are you will run into the same decks every game, with little to no deviation. I feel it is just how playing any sort of card game competitivly is and will be, and I dont think there is alot that can be done to change that.
You can take a look at Yu-Gi-Oh, though. They have thousands of usable cards, the only obsolete cards are the extremely old ones from the first few sets. There are cards that no one touches, and when innovative players begin playing these cards attention is drawn immediately and the card is banned/restricted (Cyber-stein, magical scientist, frogs etc.)
Maybe, hopefully, this mode can do the same by forcing players to not use their standard GHEIST/NM combo or their go-to Uppers deck.
Thanks for the feedback so far!
The goal of this is basically to force players to work with greater limitations, and ones that change significantly on a weekly basis rather than changing in a big way every few months. The winners will be the people who adapt best to what's available each week, building the most solid, innovative deck and reacting to the meta changes as they happen. There will be no more having a handful of typical standby decks that work for you, or instantly going to Clan X to try to counter Clan Y, because Clan Y may very well not be available.
I really like the idea of clans selected 1 week in advance. Not only does this help with voting, but it also gives people some time to potentially put decks together and run some practice games with their guildsmates.
I think this can be tested in an event, if you have the time to handle it or know some event team members to get sponsored. Lasts a month, before it starts you can have the clan voting and the bans in the Dutch section, set the parameters equal to ELO. Then the voting can be repeated every week, all while giving prizes for each week's winners.
I think the staff is introducing better cards to less played clans. Why? To create larger diversity. What do we see (occasionally/frequently) in ELO last week?
Freaks, Pussycats, Junkz, Vortex, GHEIST, Sakrohm, Roots, All Stars, Ulu Watu, La Junta.
I think UR has done quite a great job and heading in the right direction so far.
I extremely dislike the proposed idea. I would not want to see mirror matches especially if one clan stands out from another which is very likely. In the end, it is about the hand you get, and not skill. I agree that power matters a lot now. You know why? SOA clans are still dominant and will forever be there to keep many "OP" cards in check.
I've got a few little problems. As far as the FPC point goes, I see that as an over correction: c. 2011, no one played FPC in any mode ever. They were the furniture, the final cards for your collection. Then Tsubame happened and everything else is history and every other deck in ELO.
The problem with restrictive clans is then poorer players are eliminated from the running - it would be prohibitively expensive for everyone outside the top to be flexible enough to have new decks each week. Right now you can have a standard deck to run each week with minor alterations.
Having yet another room to play in might not be great. At the time of this writing, there are 2000 people in Duel and 200 in ELO. I don't think dividing that 200 would be helpful.
Finally, I'd worry about the market effects. Especially with increased prizes going out driving down certain cards' prices, the market would do flips for this mode - your eight clans would double in price for their week in the spotlight.
I like the idea, but I think there are too dramatic consequences to it.
It isn't compulsory to play this hypothetical mode. Also, the only reason people are in Duel is because of the easy prizes. It's easily the most boring and pointless game mode in UR. UR can limit Duel's prizes, let's say
