I am aware how Oshitsune can affect games, undercutting 7-powered cards and creating insurmountable pill/life gaps. For example, in a hand of all 7-powers or less with no DR/SOA, you can safely put 4 pills on any character in round 1 and still have enough pills to overcome a full-pill play with Oshi.
But good luck finding that hypothetical in competitive ELO. Berzerk, Montana, Junkz, and Jungo all have at least 2 staples with either SOA or protection: power, and nearly every clan (notable exception: bangers) has some combination of SOA, attack manipulation, and multiple 8+ powered cards that can go pill-for-pill with Oshi.
No other card that is frequently ELO banned is so easy to counter-- it's not difficult to build a deck where half the cards neutralize Oshitsune in some way. So, my question is... why do people still spend their ban votes on this guy, when much more solid choices are barely acknowledged?
I'd say they're just used to it. For example, since Wee Lee is staff banned, I've come to think he's an incredibly overpowered card and that he deserves it. Then when I check out what other people have to say about him, they keep throwing down the example of Marina being somewhat the same card and the fact that ELO is 14 life, so it's not like he can 2HKO anymore. And if you look at Oshitsune, he seems very overpowered at first glance. It's just that I think people have a one-dimensional way of thinking when it comes to certain cards, and they jump to conclusions without thinking 'maybe this card isn't that's good'.
I hope I explained it well, it seemed to make a lot of sense in my head
Now that i've been thinking about Oshitsune being kind of outdated for a while, I totally get what you mean now. I recently built a mono Skeelz deck, and here's what it looks like
Minerva- Her ability cuts Oshitsune down to 2 power, while she still has 4. Not to mention if Oshitsune wins, there's still the DR.
Dr Falkenstein- Even though Dr F gets down below Oshitsune's level, he's got 16 attack, which is worth 4 pillz with Oshitsune.
Plunk- Beats Oshitsune pill for pill.
Cley- Same deal as Plunk, just needs ability activated.
Chiara- Wins pill for pill without ability, same deal as Minerva with ability.
Sandro- Gets his power reduced to 6 vs. Oshit's 4.
Sasha- Same as Dr F.
Redra- Cuts Oshit's damage down to 4.
So yeah, every single one of my cards in the deck makes pretty quick work of Oshitsune. I guess he's too outdated to be worth consistent banning.
Skeelz are an extreme example against oshitsune. They are built to punish the soa/ sob clans and they are especially effective against nightmare (and ghiest) due to their naturally higher power coupled with round winning abilities
Oshitsune is still a pain to face. Sure he has weaknesses but consider his clan mates that back him up:
Pan and Phyllis take care of any Dr threat
Artus reduces anything threatening with damage
Glorg handles nastier abilities that can take oshitsune down
Nightmare are naturally weak against soa as an ability. Keeping them nicely balanced with an ever looming threat of soa
The fact is 7 damage on a 4* that has the potential to take cards down (even if its pill for pill) is an ever looming threat except against obvious hate clans and cards like junks and elvis Melanie for example
His dominance has dropped but he still has some overpowering matchups that make him a dangerous card on weeks he is allowed out.
overtime as more cards come out that can deal with him, his usefulness will drop. similar to what happened with tula
