Every DT game you play, you lose points from your score for the penalized cards.
They don't even have to be in your hand, just your deck.
(i.e. My hand of Kerry, Glosh, Sue and Anita still get a -2 point penalty because I have Dr Norton in my deck).
This means if you completely bomb a game (or get 1HKOed), the penalty still applies (meaning you receive -X points instead of 0). You can ignore the penalty, but you just have to win more to compensate.

On a side note: Does anyone know when the detailed score button stopped working in game? It used to tell you how many points lost due to 'malus characters' but it doesn't anymore...

I think Neo hit the nail on the head. Since you're so consistent in your finishes you have to acknowledge that you are playing plenty good enough. Dropping a star or two is exactly what you need... and you might also look at the time you are playing in. Obviously it is easier to win when less people are playing.
I used to use... oh god lets see if I can remember... Angelo, Ace, Prince Jr, Spiaghi, Mona, Waller, Caelus and Spyke. I'd win about 4 a week if I played 1 a day but before I made that deck I was just like you... 5th, 5th, 3rd DAMMIT, lol 7th 10th 6th.
Now with that being said... you might or might not find that All Stars aren't as appealing to you when you drop some of your high damage 3 stars. I recommend attack manipulation, I really do. Forcing your opponent to use more pills than you in order to win a round is, obviously, priceless.
Now you can't use my deck, obviously, cuz Spiaghi now comes with a penalty, but something like that would be good. Waller+Caelus is pretty much an instant win, for one thing.

were the hole pack all ways cost 5k or10k worth of cards.
you sign up an get a back of your cards but the values is all ways 10k so even if you do get those old cards they can play make say 200 or 300 clintz an buy a cheap card an sell some of them an buy new ones they wont.
But I think the packs suppose to be random cards even if there considered crappy.

It depends on how well you do in the DT.
When I won the DT I had 24 wins 3 losses 0 draws. I probably normally have about 8 losses in a DT and like 17 wins.
Take out Victor use Bryan.
Take out Archibald and use Thormund.
I actually really like that idea m80s. Definitely the one I spend less money on.
I do ok with:
D4 Funk Dash Dreen Eebiza Neil Nobrodroid Onik Sferik (around 30k) or sub Qubik for Eebiza (makes it around 40k)
I use the 1st 1 for type 1 and all 9 for type 2 (usually place around 25-50)
