In my opinion, they are somewhat worth investing on for missions.

E.g. Say there is a Mission and you need an ability, if your opponent plays Roots or GHEIST, you can’t really use normal abilities. What the Skeelz do help in that regard is protect you from those clans to help you make Mission progress.

For EFC, the concern is that they do not fare well in terms of performance because the key cards such as Schredder are banned. (Dr Swamp was banned by player vote). You could use Blackie though who was unbanned with that in consideration as far as I know.

The most important thing is don't give up, you're in learning phase at the moment, you'll get better over time. Just find a mode and a few clans you really enjoy playing first.

My bit of advice: Learn your abilities and the conditions that it takes to activate them.

A lot of time I see people in EFC and DT not using abilities effectively when they are low levels. Know when Courage, Reprisal, Revenge, Confidence, etc. are all activated so that you can learn to use them effectively.
