Hello all !
Veterans are well aware that we have always wanted the ELO to be both a highly strategic and very open game mode. Our desire to have as many strategic options as possible has lead us to revise the ELO mode rules several times. First of all, we created the list of banned characters gathering those who appeared to be most abused. This list enabled us to solve the main balance issues.
Next, however, the metagame gradually crystallized around the two or three dominant clans at the time. In order to prevent the metagame from stagnating, we then introduced a ban on the clan having dominated the previous week. Unfortunately, this course of action did not work as well as we had hoped. Though it provided a certain variety among the clans used to play, it mostly led up to a very negative feature: the "cycling" phenomenon that we are currently experiencing between Roots and Sentinel (and also All Stars for good measure). In addition, the ban of an entire clan is too drastic an initiative.
Not to say you're wrong... but smokey has been banned from ELO 2 or 3 of the 4 weeks I've been playing UR.
And not to kill my own deck but the best way to face Smokey is to just let him pass by. Don't even put any pills on your card. he'll only do 3 damage and use more pills then he'll get back. Piranas all lack in damage so the 3 damage won't set up for a KO either. Smokey isn't at all a "I'll die if he gets through" card to the opponent. Even so the point still stands that Smokey *does* get banned from Elo for his large bost. Even though realistically cards like Kolos are more dangerous.
1st i'd like to say, a freaks/jungo deck is nowhere near 1st place. so gta can cut that BS out right now.
2nd kolos is amazing. you can either setup having more pills than your opponent to 1 hit ko. or you can bluff and have them hit or miss. honestly i think kolos should be banned (yes i am playing him) my rating is low cus i played like 8 games this week i plan on hitting 1400 this weekend. he should be banned just because he is just SO random alot of times ill just put him out and go for the 1 hit ko turn 1. if they dont have a dmg reducer or SOA, its completely random as to whether they will win or lose the game.
but honestly elo doesnt seem to be about the most skill, cus my results VARY each week. i mean if i actually play ill always be over 1300, BUT sometimes im low 1300s, sometimes im right at the 1400 borders, and a few times im sitting around 1420. but every time i get to 1400s, it definetly comes up to luck. cus not only are points worth more at 1400 but SO many games come down to stuff like pilling 4 instead of 5 or something stupid and calling bluffs.
and no you cant call bluffs correctly all the time even if you are "skilled" its easier to call bluffs if im playing like uppers, and my opponent is playing jungo, because my bonus lets me outpill them. but when youre playing against uppers, and you are uppers yourself games come down to luck WAY too much.
Aasha: it is to some decks. Play nightmare... get a Smoky thorugh and face an opponent with 14 pillz? You are as good as dead, even if you still have 12. Sometimes one HAS to pill... for example if one has a low damage deck oneself. Sometimes one simply cannot take those points of damage. It naturally depends on the other cards present... and if I have a SOA/SOB Smokey in round one will almost always get hit with it and 1 pill. (S is pilled? ok, 3 damage to me and at least equity in pillz; S is unpilled? some damage for me for 1 pill). But recently I had exactly the case I described. It was _impossible_ to let Smokey through and still win. There was even more pill manipulation to come which would then out-pill my cards 1 by 1, could even let one thorugh completely... after round 1 it could not lose any more. He pilled Smokey 7. I pilled another 7-power card 6. That is instant death even if it does not look so as immediate as Kolos. I'll take a death by Kolos rather than that any time - at least I can straight go on and do not have to play three more rounds of an opponent grabbing free points.
And to frychikn: agreed to variance/randomness. I usually play a handful to a dozen games of ELO to grab 2 Credits. Too much randomness for me to go on.
And Kolos - random... I see where you come from. There are hands he has a free win against. But there are so many more Nightmare hands that "insta-lose" to a lot of different hands unless played by an idiot. Hail to new high-pow cards.
Player-1 having 3 more pills is many, many, many times less of an advantage then player-1 1-hit KOing Player-2. Or making Player-2 pill everything out to stop what's actually a bluff. Someone can survive a bad call against Smokey. The bad call against Kolos is the entire match. And again: Smokey is usually banned from elo. Smokey is not an issue to really be brought up since this is all about cards that deserve an elo ban that didn't get one.
The general case is once a Kolos user has more pills then the opponent in no-random he'll usually be set to do his 1-hit kill. Even someone just holding onto that card and not actually playing him can force people facing him to play so conservitively in fear of his getting enough pills to KO that they can be whipped by other things too easily.
And like I said before everything has it's own strengths and weaknesses. But an instant KO is in my opinion too large of an advantage with 7 power. Everything else has room for error. At least some margin for a mistake to make a retaliation with. Facing a 1-hit KO does not. If you lose, you lose. If you get bluffed, you lose.
At least the Kolos-1-Hit-Ko is a fast and painless defeat. Being pillz and damage down after having lost round 1 to evil Smokey is almost always a sure loss and therefore very frustrating. If you face a Smokey player without having SoA cards in your hand you can only cry and pray. There is a simple reason why Smokey is so much more frightening than Kolos: Kolos has 5 stars but the evil Smokey only 3, but their potential is similar: basically they both can win the game right away. Smokey´s potential just isn´t that obvious but being 2 or 3 pillz and 3 damage down means that you have absolutely no winning chances.
Some people underestimate Smokey because of his low damage. But his low star count, solid power and extremely nasty ability are a good reason for his Elo ban! No surprise that many people vote against him! It´s just no fun at all to play against him, if you play the wrong amount of pillz against him you are dead right away. Beat by Smokey by 1 pillz = game over, you are damage and pillz down, you can resign right away or you can go on playing three totally hopeless rounds.
@frychikn: you sir are taking this way to far if you start calling people ignorant. No matter what your opinion on the subject is, calling people ignorant is not a nice thing to do and should be avoided in public forums -.-
@Aasha: if I follow your line of thought a 1HKO card with 7 or more power is ELO bannable? o.O Really ? Kolos when he came out passed this entire discussion... The staff has lavishly tested Kolos before he came out just so as it would not unbalance the game.
1. He is in Nightmare and that is bottom to middle tier at the most.
2. If he was that great a card, why hasnt nightmare been in the top 3 ELO clans, well pretty much ever...?
3. When you get to lets say 1300+ in ELO EVERY deck you face will have damage reductors or SOA, and enough so that they can get at least 1 most often 2 in each hand...
Otherwise FPC would be top ELO clan as well:
cause it's a possible 9 power 1HKO card, Lost Hog should get banned
