Hello all !
Veterans are well aware that we have always wanted the ELO to be both a highly strategic and very open game mode. Our desire to have as many strategic options as possible has lead us to revise the ELO mode rules several times. First of all, we created the list of banned characters gathering those who appeared to be most abused. This list enabled us to solve the main balance issues.
Next, however, the metagame gradually crystallized around the two or three dominant clans at the time. In order to prevent the metagame from stagnating, we then introduced a ban on the clan having dominated the previous week. Unfortunately, this course of action did not work as well as we had hoped. Though it provided a certain variety among the clans used to play, it mostly led up to a very negative feature: the "cycling" phenomenon that we are currently experiencing between Roots and Sentinel (and also All Stars for good measure). In addition, the ban of an entire clan is too drastic an initiative.
Wow this new format is stupid. I mean I'm all for not banning any clans and what not but this is insane. you basically put random cards and making us pick which cards to vote on. I mean looking at how it comes down to right now next week the entire rescue clan is unusable in elo. piranas is still usuable because losing smokey isn't that big of a loss. sents basically are not usable anymore because they have three cards up for vote which will all get banned. but I mean it's not fair to put 3 cards from one clan and 1 card from another. they should have 2 cards from every clan up to vote each week so it's more fair. this is just making it much worse than banning clans because you're basically banning two or more clans now with this.
@Mightyman: It's not really random. It's the four winningest cards from the 9 winningest clans during the previous week. Right now Kerry is the only Rescue card in any real danger of being banned next week as she is the only one with at least 5% of the vote, and that wouldn't make Rescue unusable, especially since Marco is no longer banned. You're right, Sentinel probably won't playable if Lehane, Hawk, and Copper are all banned next week, but they won't be permanently banned and some creative players may find a way to build a Sentinel deck that is different from the norm you see all the time.
I have one big concern with the new system. Since Roots was banned last week, they have no characters on the chopping block. When the first block of banned characters comes out, it lloks as if their biggest competitor, Sentinel, will be completely crippled. It also appears that Piranas and All Stars are going to be hampered by the loss of Striker and Smokey. That is going to lead to a dominant week by Roots next week. What are these Roots players going to do with their voting majority? They are going to protect their Roots cards and keep their competition crippled. Looks like a strong possibility that Roots will gain an early advantage that will be very hard to overcome for the other clans which will put us right back into metagame stagnation. This format change should have taken place with one week where all cards are eligible before the first vote to ban so we could get a true list of most played characters.
Toro gone, striker gone, Yayoi gone and Hawk and Lehane gone. That is a card from every elo deck i have. I actually saw no problem with the previous method, can we keep that? Also, no roots? That means this week they will be dominant, and next week. Two weeks straight. And next week most clans will lose their best cards, making the roots unstoppable.
