So, since the big ELO discussion brought up the fact that way too many cards in the game never see play because nothing quite measures up to the staples, I'd love to have an "underused card appreciation thread". There are cards out there that you just put into your deck for missions or whatever reason and they won you more matches than any staple and have a special place in your heart.
For me there's a number of them:
1) Baby Q, 4* 6/6 SoB with -2/min 1 DR. You will aways, and I mean always see Ditha, Malicia or even the very underused 7 powered 4* girls and simply not put Baby Q into your deck.
What are you missing on? 6 damage for one pill, or someboy overpilling on a Sob Dr. LOL. Also, likely no freaks poison, lol.
2) Cheep - 8/2 +2 life bonus, stop: -3 dam/ min 1. Well, stop cards are vanilla cards most of the time, and this guy is bonus dependent to boot.
What are you missing on? A bloody annoying 8/4 wall which makes SoA pointless because what SoA means most of the time is no DR. He makes people play stupid - heck, you can actually pill against their SoA and win for ALL damage reduced, making a 4 gap and turning your hand into a 3 rond win one.
Gork - 7/8 SoA bonus with poison self for 2 min/4. XU52 has att manip, Mechakolos is a 1 hit KO. Otherwise people just don't use him enough.
What are you missin out on? Pretty much a bloody honey badger who doesn't give a f**k. Unconditiona 7/8 with SoA? Otherwise he kicks ass.
Naliah is pretty powerful, although she's often overlooked in favor of the other Ulu Watu 5*s. Sure, she's a little underpowered compared to the others, but the only real improvement I could imagine would be giving her 7 damage (please do this Boostr!), but that would thrust her among the ranks of Daddy Jones and the Tan Man in being OP/questionably powered. As it is, though, she does just fine for me in the Standard DTs, where I've gotten a number of 2HKOs between her and Serena that were just dirty.
Gretchen. While I'm all for using Willow because she truly is a great, splashable 2*, if you aren't using Willow and you have extra space, use her. Even though Amanie, Tuck, and Brody all exist, Gretchen played any round before 4 is better than Amanie (gap wise).
Liam as a splash is great. A 2* SOA splash? Sounds perfect for Kitties. And Huracan (even though Devil Dog, but he is predictable and costly).
Willow is also underrated. Many people run to Flora because of her psuedo-DR, or Treeman because of his +3 life, but in all reality; Willow is better than them. She has won me so many games to get the #1 2* Roots, in my eyes. In my opinion, she is even a better splash than Spaighi. Heal > DR unless you already have a Healer. (Best function with Kitties)
Wanda. Since Nabrissa came out, she has fallen into the shadows. When Lorea came out everyone was all "ZOMFG DITCH WANDA". Wanda will always be the 3rd Kitty 3* in my opinion. Unless you have a revenge like Chiara splash, then she is #2.
Baby Q is indeed underrated. While I sold mine to get Lucy, I was sad. SOB Kitties are very powerful.
Calliope is underrated. Reprisal does not hinder her at all because she is a DR, and she isn't affected by pesky bonuses if she attacks or defends. Calliope also has a lower min. than Ulrich, and has more power and damage. IMO, Calliope > Ulrich.
"The only advantage Rolph has over Wardom is slightly more solid damage."
//slightly more power* and less damage"
I think he meant better base damage, as in Rolph having 6 barring DRs, as opposed to Wardom's 5 barring DRs.
I've recently won too many games (well, casual ones, but still) with Baby Q again, while mopping up her mission. SoB and -2 dmg somehow messes up too many cards in a perfect way, especially since so many cards have been printed to be strong at their * level but shaky. Which then kinda makes everyone play stupid, and can actually give many +attack clans fits. And if she goes through - BAM, 6 in the face. She isn't ZOMG best card ever, but boy does she ever win me games... Also, Diana is of course better, but Diana is better than almost anything, so yeah...
I've been really impressed by some other cards lately.
Spudd, for example, is quite silly, and he's worked so well for me even without the bonus that it makes me think that any 7/4 +8 att guy is actially bloody strong (if at 3*). I've had some nice mission grindy streaks in DM with an all stars deck without any real staples. El Gringo, Spudd, Heartnett, Nathan, Mulligan, Agustino, Lance, Shirley - looks sooooo janky, yet won inprobably often.
Also, I'm impressed how good Rhyno and Cassandra have been for me.
In weeks Rolph is unbanned and I just happen to be playing gheist, Rolph beats out Wardom in gheist vs gheist in many cases beceause of his extra 1 base damage.
In other instances, Rolph has some power reduction, but that really only helps in the late game when playersmost accurately measure their opponents' moves and pillz useage. Rolph can beat many foes pill for pill, but 6 damage is 6 damage and that does not impress me for a 5 star, especially for gheist who is all about taking out opponents in 2 moves.
The mistake many players make istaking into consideration the math behind UR and disregarding the human element. Most of my wins come from my ability to psych out my opponents. I take risks and make moves that people almost never see coming because my moves are too obvious, my opponent is self-assured my card is not a threat just because it cannot KO them, or because I remember how I baffled experienced players when I first started playing and apply fundamental tactics that high level players abandon in their ever-changing playstyle. But a round won is only as valuable as the impact it leaves and an impact of 8 or 10 damage is worth more to me than a 5 star variant of Striker.
That's why I choose Wardom over Rolph and it's why XU52 was forever banned.
^ Psyching out opponents is actually the most important thing in the game. This is in fact how Sakrom, Junkz and Roots win games, and also the only way to play the Nightmare in (sub) 25* formats.
Think about the classic all-banned roots deck. It's pretty much straight 4 damage 3* and nothing in there looks remotely threatherning compared to an obvious bomb. But after years of playing I still have no clue how to respond to Rico. You can, and will, get your ass kicked by Dobbs ld. And nightmare is probably the bluffiest clan out there - I don't think I've ever won against a Nightmare deck with Bill in it. Why? NO CLUE. Whatever you do is wrong! If you counter the harmless looking low * guys, you get bombed in the face. If you don't, the small guys kick your ass.
Since the psych factor is so hard to figure out or gauge effectively (and it shifts with metagames), some clans are actually hard to figure out. You can never really tell which card influenced the way your opponent pills just by sitting there in your hand. This happened to me very often, a deck seemed to be working but a card looked useless to me, but as soon as I replaced it the deck stopped working. For the most obvious example take Cortez and Uchtul. If you know what you're doing they'll win you games just by staring at the other guy from your side of the table.
