Those of you who used to play Roots mono in ELO likely know that Roots mono has never offered much choice, but for the past three weeks I have been playing with the available Roots cards in Mono formats and think I have found the ONLY viable mono Roots deck in the current ELO metagame:
Fine TotemicRoots ELO
I'm not going to discuss strategy, I'd just like to point out the choices I did and did not make in building the deck to illustrate the general state of Roots mono in ELO.
The biggest thing that handicaps a Roots mono deck is the lack of good 2*s in Roots besides Arno. While Jeto/Miken are playable, they are not good cards. Beltran Cr is arguably usable, but I do not have the card, so I haven't played around with it.
This means that Roots mono decks are kind of stuck in the single 5 deck structure, because though you could take the hit of fielding a weak 2* in order to play a good 4*, there is currently no 4* worth the handicap. Amanie falters against GHEIST meta, Lilly dies to Attack bonuses, and Burdock just doesn't have enough damage.
With the single 5* choice you can really only decide between Ojibway and Rosen. As fun as Rosen's nuke is, it is too unreliable against SoA halfs, and her 7 power makes it hard to land her late game ability. Ojibway's appearance as early game makes his 7 power a bit more threatening, but not really enough. The possible 10/4 KO is the only reason Oji is good.
I'll conclude by saying mono Roots is PLAYABLE, but right now is not GOOD.
You can, but I find that the double stop is quite useful defensively. I also prefer to keep Gertjan's support maxed out, and SoA on all my characters for the mono clan.
Make no mistake, the deck can be greatly improved by adding non Roots characters (like just going with a half), but the purpose of the "experiment" was to test Roots playability. If you have to add a splash to fill a role for the clan, it pretty clearly points out that that clan can't fill that role on its own.
